A Yogi’s Tips on Finding Peace this Season
The holidays are a time of cheer and joy, but they can also bring stress and chaos. To help you find peace through this holiday season, we are featuring BumpPRO Program member and dedicated yogi Lina Oh.
Lina lives in rural, coastal Maine and is a mom to three kids, ages 7, 4, and 2. Together with her husband, Lina runs a farm stand and garden that feeds their family and community. In addition to her three human children, Lina is mom to a rabbit, a kitten, a dog, chickens and goats.
Here are her best tips for finding peace during the holidays:
-
Establish a Routine
A daily routine can help keep you focused during even the busiest time of the year. Make sure to schedule time for things that bring you joy and peace. It is easy to get caught up caring for everyone else and scheduling holiday activities, but planning down time can keep you feeling your best and help give you energy to get through all the holiday parties and shows this time of year brings.
Lina suggests, “Wake up early if you need to get some time alone or for certain kinds of exercise, like weight training and cardio.”
-
Prioritize Movement
Adding exercise to your busy schedule may sound daunting, but regular movement can bring stress relief and give an energy boost. Remember that movement can be fun and social. Go ice skating with your big kids, build a snowman with your littles, take a hike to forage for garland with your friends.
Lina says that daily exercise is her go to stress buster. “A little bit goes a long way!,” she says. “Jumping jacks with my kids is one of my favorite ways to quickly shake out our crazies and turn our moods around. Taking it into the sunshine gives an even greater boost.”
-
Practice Meditation
Taking time to honor yourself and your needs is so important. Remember, you don’t need to sit still to meditate. Meditation can be mindfully sipping on your favorite holiday beverage, listening to holiday music that brings you joy, or sitting by the window and watching the snow fall. If needed use meditation cards or other props, like a candle to help focus and guide your thoughts. Here's a great guide to starting a practice.
“I wake up early before the rest of the family is up so that I can have a couple hours to tune into my body - its needs, its feelings, its health. Getting this time every morning is so important for my mental health.” -Lina
